Long Island Airport is an airpark community located in Catawba County, North Carolina on the beautiful shoreline of Lake Norman. Nestled on a peninsula surrounded by Lake Norman, Long Island Airport is a haven for aviation enthusiasts both land and water based. NC26 has a 3,000 x 100 foot lighted turf runway, a seaplane ramp, and boating docks, in a family-friendly community. The airport has many experimental aircraft owners/builders in residence, and many community members are active in EAA Chapter 309, with weekly build nights at Long Island as well as nearby Lake Norman Airport.
The airport hosts an annual fly-in event the last Saturday in September, and residents host frequent holiday parties year round (Independence Day, Memorial Day, Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s Day, etc.). Many community member get together the 3rd Saturday of each month for a group fly-out to area aiports with restaurants on site (Carthage and Rutherford are common destinations).
Airport is unattended: Call 1-877-FLY-NC26 (1-877-359-6226) for information and permission to land. Mowing occurs in the Spring through Fall months, usually on Thursdays. However, we may mow on other days due to rain. Watch for the mower during takeoffs and landings!
Standard practice at NC is to turn on the runway lights during takeoff and landing during the day or night. Three clicks for on. Due to the slope of the runway, other aircraft, golf carts, or mowing equipment may not be visible. Activating lights lets other know runway operations are under way.
CAUTION: There are additional powerlines of varying heights (from short poles to tall towers) near LIA around and across the lake that are NOT shown on sectional charts and that are not marked by orange balls. Seaplanes and low flying aircraft should exercise EXTREME caution when approaching to land in the cove parallel to the runway or when flying low (partiularly below 400′ AGL). Accidents have occurred in which an aircraft struck powerlines between Long Island Airpark and nearby Lake Norman Airport.
